The Hook: Honoring a last wish, Ireland, mystery

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I skimmed through the story line on the back cover. All I know is that Ireland and mystery intrigued me and add to the fact that it was about a twenty-something-year-old honoring her grandma’s last wish, hooked!

The book centers around twenty-something year old Maura, who ends up in Ireland as a promise kept to her grandmother who just passed away. The adventure begins almost as soon as Maura sets foot in Ireland. As she tries to familiarize herself in a foreign land, getting to know her grandma’s heritage, Maura finds herself a mystery of a body that was found in the bogs of Cork County. And she can’t help herself.

The story is a wonderful mix of mystery, history, and genealogy. Ms. Connolly has me hooked. What history geek, mystery geek, and family historian wouldn’t be? I mean, this story speaks to all the geek in me. And add to that the fact that it is Irish history … yep. There’s just enough mystery to keep things interesting. And not just because of the dead body. You have the history of Maura’s grandmother’s past. The mystery of a close friend to her grandmother, Bridget. You have the mystery of the pub Maura works at. I mean, Ms. Connolly drops the hints in the right places to make sure your curiosity drives you. It’s fabulous reading.

I’ve already read Scandal In Skibbereen (County Cork, #2) shortly after this one (July 2014) and An Early Wake (County Cork, #3). I apologize for not reviewing them on my blog sooner, but I wasn’t posting as often so 😛 . I am now, though, and this has become one of my favorite series so I need to do right by it.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a bit of Ireland history and appreciates a decent mystery.
