Educational Pursuits: Essay Exams

These suckers are hard! Hard, I tell ya!

I submitted my exam earlier today and it’s taken me this long, a few hours, to recuperate from it.

This is the second essay exam I’ve taken and I love them and hate them at the same time. For those of you who are unfamiliar with an essay exam, here are the bare bones:

  • The exam has four parts
  • Each part has a set of questions, generally about four questions
  • You choose one question you want to answer
  • You write at least 10 sentences (around 250 words) to answer that
  • It’s an open book test

The first essay exam I took had a time limit of 3 hours and I failed! Ok, I actually got a B, but I didn’t answer the last question. I ran out of time.

This essay exam, not so bad. This one didn’t have a time limit and I am grateful for that.

I love these types of test for a few reasons:

  1. It’s challenging
  2. It’s kind of fun to try and come up with an answer
  3. It’s different from your multiple choice testing

I cringe at these types of tests for a few reasons:

  1. It’s challenging
  2. You have to kind of know your material in order to easily formulate your answers (not that’s a bad thing)
  3. It’s not multiple choice
  4. It takes the professor some time to go through and grade it so there’s some lag time for you to know how you did.

So, my professor has yet to review my answers, but I hope I did ok.

And another class has come to a close. I’m already into the second week of World Civilizations and I’m stoked.

Wish me luck!
